As summer vacations are in full swing, it’s the perfect time to step back and celebrate life’s best moments, big or small. Embracing these victories, even the ones that are hard to find, can help us cultivate joy for the future.
I’ve often written about the Blue Zone island of Ikaria (or Icaria) in Greece, a place where people live well into their 100s, embracing each day to the fullest. Life on this island is enriched by a wholesome Mediterranean diet, active lifestyles, and meaningful social connections. During summer, the island comes alive with the Panagiria—a series of traditional rituals tied to religious festivals—where locals and visitors alike revel in good company and splendid local wine against the backdrop of a serene island setting.
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives filled with packed schedules, financial worries, and stress, making time for such simple pleasures might seem impossible. Yet, it’s precisely this spirit of celebration and relaxation that we should aim for, especially during the lazy days of summer.
A Joyful, Stress-Free Life
One of the most remarkable traits of the people in Ikaria is their effortlessly relaxed way of life. They not only eat well but also lead a less stressful existence, waking up late, savoring unhurried meals, enjoying a midday nap, and spending their evenings with family and friends. In this tight-knit community, older family members are honored and cared for, while diseases common in the Western world, like heart disease and cancer, are notably rare.
For most of us, such an idyllic lifestyle feels far removed from reality. But we can take inspiration from Ikaria by focusing on problem-solving, reducing stress, and leaning on our support networks. These small steps can lead us toward a more fulfilling and joyful way of living.
The stories from Ikaria remind us that sometimes a change of pace is needed to reduce stress and forge a better path forward. So, take a moment to pause, relax, and recharge. When we give ourselves permission to step back, solutions to our challenges often appear more clearly.
Hope for Myeloma Patients
The future looks brighter for myeloma patients, with innovative treatments leading to longer remissions and new possibilities for improving quality of life. Yet, the day-to-day realities for patients can still be overwhelming. Accessing the right treatment, managing side effects, and navigating the emotional toll can all feel daunting.
In these moments, leaning on your healthcare team, seeking second opinions, and engaging in collaborative decision-making can make a world of difference. Quality of life has rightfully become a central focus in treatment—not just extending remission but ensuring that the journey is as comfortable as possible. Open conversations with your doctor, family, and friends about your treatment and how it affects you are crucial steps toward a balanced and fulfilling life.
Remember, you’re not alone on this journey. The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is always here to offer guidance and support.
Creating Your Own Sanctuary of Calm
Let the sunny days of summer be a chance to re-energize, reflect, and rebuild your inner strength. Whether it’s finding joy in problem-solving, letting go of stress, or simply dreaming about the future, embrace what brings you peace.
Ikaria teaches us that life isn’t just about keeping up with schedules and budgets. Take the time to slow down, read a book, enjoy a peaceful moment in the garden, or connect with loved ones. Every one of us deserves that time to recharge and refocus.
As we gather to celebrate the 4th of July, let’s take a cue from the islanders of Ikaria. Make the most of your time with family and friends, cherish the laughter, and truly savor each moment. Here’s to a joyful, relaxed, and unforgettable summer!
